Happy Wednesday! I'm not a fan of making excuses - for anything in life really - so I try to do it as little as possible. This is especially true when it comes to staying active. I schedule my workouts & long walks with my dog into my day and make it a priority, and I didn't want this to change when I injured my foot. As I talked about last week, I've been working around my injury and doing low-key workouts - sometimes at the gym and sometimes in my living room. Wearing the boot hasn't been fun, and me hobbling around the gym probably looks pretty comical, but I've been showing up and exercising - no excuses. Since I've been trying to not put a lot of pressure on my feet, my gym workouts have involved a lot of arm moves lately. After yesterday's workout, my triceps today are ... [Read More]

Foot Injury Update & My Favorite At-Home Exercises That Put No/Low Pressure on the Feet
Happy, happy weekend everyone! It's been a low-key Saturday for me so far - sleeping in, eating delicious whole wheat oatmeal blueberry banana pancakes (They are seriously the only pancakes I've made recently!), taking Harley for a long walk, and now here I am. Adam got an awesome hiking backpack for his birthday that he wanted to try out, so he went for a hike and I'm here sulking because I can't hike and blogging to you all. Since I'm laying on the couch icing my foot, I figured this is a good time for an injury update. As I briefly mentioned last week, I have been wearing a soft cast on my foot. When I went to the podiatrist, he confirmed that I have sesamoiditis (further explanation of that here), and that one of my sesamoid bones looks a lot worse than the other and is probably ... Quickie Cardio Leg Blast
Hi friends! After a couple of days of feeling icky and taking it a bit easy, I'm feeling more like myself today. Having more of my normal energy levels, my Thursday was a nicely active day, with half hour walks with my dog first thing this morning and also tonight, and squeezing in a quick hour of volunteering at the Humane Society walking dogs before heading to the gym for a sweaty workout this evening. On my way to volunteer, I slugged down a bottle of Well Well Wow! - a liquid blend of chlorella growth factor and eleuthero that's meant to energize you without the jittery side effects of caffeine. As I've talked about before, I'm a fan of consuming algae. Chlorella is a superfood algae that is thought to detoxify the body. So when the makers of Well Well Wow!, Sun Chlorella, asked ... The Sore Triceps Workout
A few days ago, I wanted to do some strength training before cycling at the gym. I tend to do weight exercises in the aerobics room because I like my space to bounce around, but a class was starting in the room in less than half an hour. I came up with a workout routine that focuses on triceps + chest to get my muscles fatigued in a jiffy -- and it certainly did just that. My triceps were sore for 2 days afterwards! Explanations of the above exercises: (Standing bent over) triceps extension Tricep bench dips Skull crushers aka head bangers Closed grip dumbbell press Happy exercising! ... [Read More]
The Trio Timed Challenge & Other At-Home Workout Ideas
Happy Super Bowl Sunday from the chilly, snowy East coast! I flew into Jersey yesterday to see my family. We recently got word that my grandma, who I've always been very close with, has cancer and needs to undergo a serious surgery. I wanted to come out here to visit her in the hospital and spend time with my loved ones, so I booked a last minute ticket. 2,500 miles is just a hop, skip, and a jump away when someone I love is sick! Most of my time this week is going to be spent at the hospital, hanging with my family, and getting work done, but I still want to live really healthily this week, especially to keep on track with my DietBet. Besides planning ahead with my eats as much as I can and making sure I always have nutritious snacks on hand, I'd like to fit in some exercise ... [Read More]
Everything But the Legs: Working Out Around an Injury
First off, I just wanted to say that my thoughts are with everyone in the path of Hurricane Sandy. It's been hard to watch the chaotic weather hitting my home state of New Jersey, where my family & friends live, while I'm so far away from it all. Luckily, all of my loved ones are safe and doing fine - just without power and with some minor damage, including the gigantic tree at my grandma's house that shines with Christmas lights every year that's now on the ground blocking her driveway. Natural disasters always remind me of what's most important in life -- the people I love. On a lighter note, let's talk workouts. I've mentioned it on the blog before, but I've been battling a calf injury for a couple of years now. I tore my calf muscle running, at first procrastinated getting help ... [Read More]
