Happy Presidents' Day! I'm enjoying a much needed Monday off. Traveling always takes it out of me a bit and I love that I had today and yesterday to recoup. Last night I was exhausted and passing out by 8 PM -- helllooo jet lag! This afternoon is shaping up to be an active one: first we took Harley girl for an hour walk, then Adam and I played tennis together. Next up: food shopping and whipping up a fancy dinner! (via) February is American Heart Month, which aims to raise awareness of heart disease, its unfortunate prevalence in our country, and the things people can do to prevent it. A few stats via the CDC about how heart disease affects people in the U.S.: Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. 1 out of every 4 deaths is caused by heart ... Holy Guacamole! My Go-To Easy Guac
When it comes to healthy eating, a big piece of the puzzle is moderation. If you're trying to trim down or just aiming to eat healthier, it doesn't mean that you can never treat yourself. What it does mean is that you need to be mindful of the foods you eat and watch your portions. Giving into your food cravings here and there is perfectly conducive to losing weight, but here's the catch: If you want something, let's say ice cream, eat a cup. It won't wreck your diet. But don't bring a gallon of it to the couch with you and dig in with your spoon until you're stuffed. And if you do wind up going with the latter option, once you've eaten it, be done with it. So many people, myself included, will overdo it one night, but instead of moving on and forgetting about it, have a tendency to beat ... [Read More]
Tips for Making Smart Choices in Unhealthy Environments
Happy Sunday Funday! Our job as puppy babysitters has come to an end. Hogan was adorable and fun to play with, but watching him for a few days reminded me of how far we've come as dog owners with our Harley girl. It is so nice to be out of that puppy stage and for her to be fully potty trained, no longer teething and way more chilled out. I'm happy with just having one dog and think it's safe to say that we won't be getting a new puppy anytime soon! This weekend was a very sporty one for me. Last night we went to the Chargers/Cowboys preseason game. I'm a huge NY Giants fan, but it was a really fun time finally going to an NFL game in San Diego. It was even better because the Chargers were playing the Cowboys, who I strongly dislike, so last night I was all Go Chargers! and just rooting ... [Read More]
A Soup & Salad Kinda Night
After living with a cold-stricken man for the past week and trying to resist the bug, I've officially caught an annoying upper respiratory thing. Whomp. While I'm confident that I can overcome cold #237 of my life (okay, perhaps that's a dramatic overestimate), it never feels good to have a pounding headache, itchy throat, and feel exhausted for no apparent reason. I love to relax for a couple hours, but beyond that, I seem to have a tough time just hanging out. I suppose I just like to be busy and productive. But today, I resisted the urge to push myself to do a lot and kept it pretty low-key. And keeping it low-key means no-fuss meals like tonight's dinner, soup and salad. It took all of 5 minutes to put together, and was a healthy under-the-weather meal. Every ingredient happened to ... [Read More]
Sweet & Sour Pineapple and Red Bell Pepper
Do you know what today is? I just noticed on my calendar that it's National Teacher Day. Hope it was a good day for all the amazing teachers out there, my best friend being one of them (love you Meg!!)! Last week I recapped everything I had eaten one day (here). As I mentioned then, I think it's a good way to show what a vegetarian diet could look like to people, whether they're veg-curious, or just looking for different meal ideas or to eat healthier - whatever the case may be. With that said, here is a look at my eats today: Breakfast: lemon Chobani Greek yogurt + blueberries Lunch: sweet & sour pineapple and peppers with brown rice After cutting up a pineapple a few days ago, I was thinking about what I could do with it besides eating it plain as usual. I ... [Read More]
Wholesome Eating When You’re On-the-Go
Happy Friday! Earlier I read an issue of Fitness magazine with Brooke Burke on the cover. The article discussed her tips for staying fit. I don't know about you, but when a 40-year old woman whose given birth to 4 children and looks like that is talking about what keeps her in shape, I make sure to read. Though she's undoubtably genetically gifted, this chick seems like she is dedicated to staying in great shape. Her diet secret? She never skips a meal. I strongly agree with Brooke on this one. Not only do I make sure to eat 3 meals a day, I typically have 2 snacks as well. Eating small meals frequently prevents you from getting too famished and craving unhealthy foods. Skipping meals puts your body on a path towards fasting and signals the metabolism to slow. Um, no thank you! I know ... [Read More]
