IIN Chat: American Health Facts
"America doesn't have a healthcare system. We have a disease management system." - Andrew Weil, IIN lecturer As some of you already know, in January I started school at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to become a certified health coach. The school offers an awesome flexible yearlong program, and I'm in the thick of it and loving it. Every week I feel engaged in the lessons, and it's great how I can listen to the lectures anywhere on my iPad. As I recently mentioned, lately I've gone to the beach a few times to do school work, which provides just about the perfect setting for relaxing while learning! In February I did a recap of my first month of school, and I was planning on doing a post on my favorite ideas and concepts for each month I'm in school... but somehow a few ... [Read More]
Gear Review: Fitbit Flex
Hi there! Hope that you're having a fabulous weekend. Happy Easter to all of those who celebrate it! Today I have a healthy living gadget review for you on the Fitbit Flex! If you're a longtime Foodie Loves Fitness reader, you may remember that I used to have a Fitbit Ultra, which I adored and constantly used (I did a review on it in 2012 here). I used to clip it onto my pants at the waist, which never really was a problem...well, until about a year ago when I went for a motorcycle ride with my hubby, got home, and realized my Fitbit had somehow flung off of me during our ride (whomp, whomp). It was obviously never to be seen again, and while I loved using the tracker, I just didn't feel like buying a new one. Fast forward to last Christmas. My father-in-law and I had talked ... Getting an Education in CrossFit Culture
Recently I had a freelance writing assignment centered around CrossFit, so I ventured around to different gyms in my area to interview owners and members and get a better grasp of what it's all about. Though I've never tried it, I have a couple of friends who are avid CrossFitters and I've watched the CrossFit Games on TV before, so I had a general idea of what the fitness regimen entails. However, doing research for the article really gave me a much more detailed look at what it's all about and why people are crazy about the so called "sport of fitness." (source) I learned that conventional CrossFit wisdom says to forget about the aesthetics, to focus more on what you can do versus what you want your body to look like. Essentially, it values athleticism over superficial concepts ... [Read More]
Meatout: Eat Vegan For a Day
Hi friends! I first heard about Meatout last night via Twitter when I was in a state of exhaustion, so I'm way late on posting info about this... but better late than never to help spread the word right? So just what is Meatout? Meatout is a day of international observance with a purpose of exposing the public to the joys and benefits of a plant-based diet, while promoting the availability and selection alternatives to meat and dairy in mainstream grocery stores, restaurants and catering operations. Meatout has been observed every year since 1985 and has become the world's largest annual grassroots diet education campaign. Meatout is a movement led by Farm Animals Rights Movement (FARM), with a goal of getting 25,000 people to participate in the pledge. Partipants pledge to ... [Read More]
Institute for Integrative Nutrition: Month 1 Recap
I've mentioned it a few times since I started, but in mid-January I became a student at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. The school is a yearlong course to become a certified health coach, and so far I've really enjoyed every single week. Not only am I a bit of a nerd in general who loves school and learning, but at IIN, I'm learning about topics related to a huge passion of mine (which you may have figured out by now!): healthy living. I thought it'd be fun to do a monthly recap post where I share some of my favorite concepts and ideas from the lessons, so this is recap #1! First off, how the school operates: I love how classes are set up to fit into a busy schedule. The school has an app so that you can listen to the lectures on your iPhone or do work on your iPad ...
