Happy June! It’s almost officially summa, summa, summertimeeeee – which in my food world means juicy peak season produce, grilling, eating outdoors as much as possible, and all kinds of refreshing treats, smoothies and drinks.
Truth be told, I pretty much drink smoothies year-round. Lately I’ve been making smoothies every day for my husband, daughter and me. They’re such a great way to pack lots of nutrition into one little meal.
And while combining fruit and milk may not seem revolutionary, there are definite ways to level up your smoothie game and make it a filling, superfood-packed meal or snack. Follow my 4 tips for making the perfect smoothie!
How to Make the Best Superfood Smoothie
1. Pack in the produce.
Smoothies are a great way to really pack in the nutrition, and I often make my smoothies with 3 servings of fruits & veggies. Instead of using the same fruit, switch it up and try a variety of produce – from watermelon and cantaloupe to raspberries and mango, there are so many options!
I like sneaking greens in there – my favorite being baby spinach because you can’t even tell it’s in there (I swear!). Another way to boost your smoothie’s nutrients is to use a superfood green supplement.
2. Add in healthy fats.
Don’t shy away from including healthy fats in your smoothies… They’re brain food that your body thrives on! Try to blend in nut butters – peanut, almond, and cashew are my favorites – avocado, or coconut, or sprinkle some chopped nuts on top for crunch.
3. Include protein.
I usually include some type of plant-based protein in my smoothies to balance out all of those healthy carbs and fat. Options include protein powder, chia or hemp seeds, ground flaxseed and oats.
4. Pick a nutritious base that fits your needs.
I love using different plant milks in my smoothies, as different milks have different perks. For instance, the almond milk I use is rich is Vitamins D and E + calcium, but sometimes when I want an extra protein boost, I’ll use pea protein milk.
If you want to add in extra healthy fat, try using canned coconut milk as your base and make a tropical smoothie. If you want something super hydrating and light, use coconut water as your smoothie base.

I hear ya about eating outside – we try to spend as much time outdoors as possible! We just got back from a week in Charleston, SC, and we ate outside every single day. Amazing! Speaking of amazing, this is a great smoothie guide, Nicole. We do love smoothies around here, and that peaches ‘n cream one is totally calling my name right now! (Speaking of peaches, have you heard about The Peach Brothers? Look ’em up. They bring Southern peaches up here to the northeast. We got peaches from them last year, and no kidding they were the best peaches we’ve had in years. I can’t wait for this years dropoff!)

Oh fun! I totally have visiting Charleston on my list while we’re living in the northeast. I’ve only been for work & my husband has never been before.
I’ve never heard of The Peach Brothers – They sound awesome! I’ve got to check em out.

You have given me some great ideas to switch up my kale/berry/protein smoothie rut. I have many of your suggested ingredients but needed some inspiration to pull them out to use in the mornings. Looking forward to adding hemp in the mix. Thanks for the lovely photos too.
