One of my favorite autumn annual traditions is going apple picking.
This year, my husband and I have already gotten our apple picking on in CT – complete with a jug of apple cider and apple cider donuts. We swaddled our 1-month old baby girl up and brought her along for her first taste of our apple picking tradition, though she wouldn’t know that she was quite the popular girl at the orchard because she snoozed the entire time.
After I go apple picking, I always love to bake up a storm. I’ll whip up some of my favorite recipes with apples, and then I always play around with new ones as well.
Since I currently have quite the job of breastfeeding my milk monster (for real, she went from 5 pounds to 8 pounds seemingly in the blink of my eyes!), my focus has been on creating recipes that include ingredients that help to naturally increase lactation. Hence today’s recipe: apple oatmeal breakfast cookies.
Ingredients that help to amp up milk production not so coincidentally are also ingredients that I routinely bake with because they are nutritional powerhouses.
So just what are in these cookies that are great for lactation?
- Oats
- Walnuts
- Ground flaxseed
- Hemp hearts
- Whole wheat flour
- Coconut oil
See, normal healthy ingredients my friends! I wanted to point this out because inevitably when I share that I’m making lactation promoting snacks on Instagram, a few people always think that I’m putting my breastmilk IN the recipe… No way, I need all of my milk for my milk monster baby! These cookies are yummy for not just mamas, but everyone in the family.
I call these cookies breakfast cookies because they aren’t super sweet, making them great for an on-the-go morning meal or snack. They’re sweetened with honey and I like to let the fresh diced apple and cinnamon flavors shine through.
I like to warm a few cookies up and then slather some almond butter or peanut butter on top of them!
Apple Oatmeal Lactation Breakfast Cookies
Ingredients
- 3 cups dry oats I use old fashioned
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 3 TBSP hemp hearts
- 3 TBSP ground flaxseed meal
- 2 cups apples peeled and diced (2 smallish apples)
- 1 banana mashed
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/3 cup walnuts chopped
- 1/3 cup unsweetened apple sauce
- 1/4 cup coconut oil melted
- 2 TSP vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 TSP cinnamon
- 1 TSP baking powder
- 1/4 TSP salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat a large baking sheet with cooking spray.
- In a mixing bowl, combine oats, flour, hemp hearts, flaxseed, walnuts, cinnamon, salt and baking powder.
- In another bowl, whisk together the mashed banana, honey, apple sauce, melted coconut oil and vanilla extract.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredient bowl and mix to combine. Fold in the chopped apple and evenly incorporate into the batter.
- Spoon the batter onto the baking sheet, forming around 35 cookies. Use the back of a spatula or your hands to flatten the cookies out a bit.
- Bake for 9-11 minutes or until the bottom of the cookies are lightly browned.
- Allow to slightly cool before transferring to a cooling rack to finish cooling down.
- Enjoy! Store cookies in an airtight container in the fridge.

Breast milk IN the cookies!? Seriously people!? I’m a dude, and even I know that. Haha! So I don’t know much about lactation producing ingredients, but I do know I love everything about these cookies. The flavors are right up my alley! We just went apple picking last week ourselves…yum! 🙂

Hi can I use all purpose flour instead of whole wheat or is it important that i use whole wheat flour for lactation? I’m desperate and been trying a lot of ways to produce more milk but nothing is working.

Hi Jozefeen,
I’m sorry that you’re struggling with breastfeeding – I’ve been there so I know it is tough.
It’s best to use whole wheat flour for this recipe, as whole grains in general are one of the foods thought to support milk production. You can also just use more oats if you don’t have wheat flour on hand.
Wishing you the best of luck with your breastfeeding journey!
