Recently I heard that ice cream is Americans’ favorite dessert. As an ice cream lover myself, this may be one of the only commonalities that this healthy eater has with typical American eats!
Ever since the weather warmed up, ice cream has been my top pregnancy craving. And while I’ve been eating dairy ice cream as well, since I like to limit my dairy intake and eat predominantly plant-based, I’ve been experimenting with trying out all of the dairy free frozen desserts available (okay, I haven’t gotten to every single one, but I’ve been making my way around the ice cream aisle!).
Dairy free eaters no longer have to settle for blah options… because let me tell you, dairy free ice creams have drastically improved in recent years! I’ve also noticed the wide variety of flavors and bases that are on the market these days. There used to only be coconut-based options, and while I like shredded coconut topping my açaí bowls and coconut milk giving rich flavor to my Thai dishes, I don’t want some things to taste coconutty. For instance, chocolate peanut butter ice cream? No coconut flavor with that please.
After lots of testing, today I’m sharing 5 of my favorite dairy free frozen dessert brands that don’t have a coconut milk base!
Whole Foods 365.
Last year Whole Foods launched a line of almond milk ice creams with its 365 Everyday Value brand, and its pints do not disappoint. Its list of flavors includes classics like vanilla bean and chocolate, along with more interesting flavors like berry chantilly cake. They also release limited edition seasonal flavors, and my personal favorite thus far has been the above pictured Irish whiskey salted caramel pint, which was available last fall/winter.
Sorbabes.
Sorbabes offers delicious flavors like pistachio & caramel and peanut butter luva, but it’s their fruity sorbets that really do it for me. With flavors including Passionilla – orange passionfruit sorbet, vanilla chips and orange zest – Jam’n Lemon, and Raz’n Berry – raspberry sorbet with a wildberry swirl and chocolaty bits – the combinations are so fun and the fresh fruit flavors are bursting.
So Delicious.
From almondmilk bars and oat milk pints to cashewmilk deliciousness, So Delicious Dairy Free rocks it with their variety of frozen dessert options. One of my favorites is their salted caramel cluster pint – pictured above in a cone topped with a few candied cashews.
Talenti.
Talenti’s dairy free sorbettos are made with just a few ingredients: fruit, sugar, water, lemon juice. Since I’ve been a sucker for all things mango throughout my pregnancy, their mango sorbet is my favorite!
Ben & Jerry’s.
One of America’s most well known ice cream brands has a line of non-dairy pints with lots of flavor offerings, including Cherry Garcia, Chunky Monkey and Cinnamon Buns. They’re higher in calories and fat than I typically go for with ice creams, but their Caramel Almond Brittle flavor is heavenly and I find that I’m good with eating a smaller portion of it because it’s rich.
Tell me… What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?

Well I for one appreciate your dedication to working your way through the ice cream aisle! I’ve noticed a huge jump in non-dairy ice cream options lately, too, but I haven’t tried many of them. That Caramel Almond Brittle from Ben & Jerry’s sounds amazing though…I’m a sucker for all things brittle!
