It’s no secret that dairy-free milks have become uber popular in the beverage world. From almond, soy, and cashew milks, to rice, coconut, and macadamia varieties, there are so many brands and types to choose from.
A few of my favorite non-dairy milk varieties are almond and cashew milks, and I use them a lot in smoothies, pancake batters and cereal. I’ve also been obsessed with Silk dark chocolate almond milk lately. I’ll enjoy a cup when I want a little something sweet and it hits the spot!
Speaking of dairy-free milks, have you tried oat milk yet? Better yet, have you tried making oat milk yourself? Turns out it’s actually quick and simple to make oat milk from scratch – not to mention inexpensive.
For this oat milk recipe, all you need are a couple of ingredients and a few minutes to spare. Even if you buy store-bought milk often as I do, I like having this recipe handy for when I run out.
I also created a chocolate protein oat milk recipe for Shape, so check that out if you’re looking for an easy way to add a protein boost into a snack or meal!
Follow this simple step-by-step guide to whipping up your own batch of oat milk below.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup dry rolled oats
- 3 cups water + additional water for soaking oats
- 1-2 TBSP pure maple syrup, depending on sweetness preference
- 2 TSP vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Other necessary items:
- High-powdered blender
- Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth
- Bowl for soaking oats
- Sealed container for storing milk
STEP 1. Place the dry oats in a bowl and cover with water. Soak for 30 minutes.
STEP 2. Drain the oats through a fine mesh strainer (or cheesecloth), discarding the water.
STEP 3. Transfer the oats to your high-powdered blender. Add in the 3 cups of water, maple syrup, vanilla extract and pinch of salt. Blend for 30 seconds, or until the mixture is mostly smooth.
STEP 4. Remove any bits of oats that are left by straining the milk through a fine strainer. What will remain is a smooth, plant-based milk beverage.
STEP 5. Transfer the milk to a sealed container and store it in the fridge.
Tell me… What type of milk drinker are you? Have you ever made any kind of milk from scratch?

So interesting! I’ve bought oat milk before but never thought of making it at home before. It does look easier than I would have thought.

I’ve been obsessed with oat milk lately although I’ve been buying it from the store. I could probably save a ton of money and have less waste by making my own. Thanks for the inspo!

Ooo I need to try this. I’ve been buying oat milk lately whenever I drive to Whole Foods (it’s 1 1/2 hours away!). I should so just make it myself so I can have it all the time!

90 minutes to get to Whole Foods? That is commitment lady! But I’d probably do it too haha I love exploring the aisles of WFM!

Oat milk is my favorite non dairy milk for coffee — I’m in love with it! It would be so much more cost effective to make it at home, and it looks so easy!
