A neat perk of being a healthy living blogger is getting invited to a lot of cool local events. Attending Southern California area events geared towards health & wellness enthusiasts & pros is a great way to network, learn & have fun!
Last week I had the chance to attend the MindBody BOLD Conference in beautiful downtown San Diego. Many of you workout buffs probably recognize the name MindBody as the platform that you use to book studio classes, and spa and salon businesses also use them as their booking platform. The BOLD conference brings together people from all over the place that work in the wellness industry.
I was able to fit some of the BOLD seminars and events into my schedule, and my two favorite events of the conference were 1.) an outdoor yoga class with Sadie Nardini, whose YouTube yoga videos I’ve been doing for years {I’ll chat more about that during my next workout recap post!}, and 2.) Magic Johnson’s keynote speech.
I obviously knew Magic Johnson as a basketball player for the Lakers, but what I didn’t know until his speech was just how successful he’s been post-NBA as a businessman. A few of his endeavors that I had no idea about include him once owning 100+ Starbucks locations & creating a movie theater chain, both of which he opened in urban areas that were lacking such businesses, and a joint venture with Sodexho, the world’s largest food services company.
Magic was super charismatic and had this great energy about him, and today I want to share the three pillars of success that Magic talked about during his speech. He was talking specifically about success in business, but I think you can apply these principles to almost anything that you’re pursuing in life.
1.) Discipline. To be successful, you must have the discipline to show up and put in the work day in & day out.
Magic also talked about discipline as understanding that you’re working towards things that may not happen right now. Business may take years of growth and planning, and the same goes for a lot of other things in life. Want to lose weight and get rid of your Type 2 Diabetes? It may take years of work. Want a strong marriage? You’ve got to put in the effort to be solid & consistent in your relationship. Things take time, and you’ve got to have the discipline to pursue them until they come to fruition.
Magic also talked about how sometimes saying ‘no’ is a powerful thing, and will lead you to what you should be doing. That’s another type of discipline I think – to be able to listen to your gut, and have patience in knowing that what’s meant for you will present itself if you make the right decisions, which includes saying no at times.
2.) Be a perfectionist. Magic stressed the importance of doing everything the right way, and said that he’d rather do things right and not make money on a project, rather than do it the wrong way and make a quick buck. It’s all about the little details.
3.) “Bring passion and love into what you do every single day.” I think that just about everyone in the audience could relate to Magic talking about being passionate about what you do, because we all work in the wellness world in some capacity… and us health & wellness pros are a passionate group of people! You get out what you put in, so put love and effort into what you do.
Tell me.. What would you add to this list? What’s the last fun event you went to?

Great listen, especially making itty-bitty steps towards something that may take years. Sometimes I get frustrated when i don’t see results quick enough.

Oh don’t we all! Especially because we live in a society where everything is about instant gratification, sometimes it’s hard to be happy with slow progress. But it’s all about perseverance right?!

Love this post, Nicole! I’ve heard Magic speak on tv (usually related to sports), and he’s always fascinating to listen to. But I had no idea about his other business ventures. How cool is that? But what I really love are these pillars of success. All too often, I see people just go for a quick buck rather than play it slow and do things the right way. I’ve seen it in everything from contractors at our house to even bloggers. My Dad taught me at a young age to be a perfectionist. While that has it’s difficulties (you always want to do things better!), it does work out in the long run. Thanks for sharing Magic’s thoughts here!

That’s so true, all too often people try to take shortcuts.. but a lot of the time that hurts them in the long-run. I loved that Magic emphasized doing things the right way!

I had no idea Magic Johnson was such a businessman either! His tips are so inspiring and much needed for me right now. I’ve been so consumed with house hunting that the putting my all into the blog has taken a back seat lately. I really need to focus on being more disciplined with my time!

Ooooh you’ve been house hunting?! That’s so exciting!

This conference sounds wonderful and Magic Johnson has been such a success on and off the basketball court. His 3 pillars of success are rules to live by!
