Here at Foodie Loves Fitness, I practice & preach the concept of moderation when it comes to most things. But, if there’s one thing that I think you can’t have enough of, it’s gratitude (well… and love).
Longtime readers probably have heard me talk about the concept of practicing gratitude daily. I believe that doing so brings lots of positivity into your life, and as with the law of attraction goes, it also attracts new good things. I’ve noticed that a lot of people tend to harp on the negative, and instead, I invite you to focus more on the positive this year.
If you’re wondering about techniques to be more consciously grateful, you’re in luck, because today I’m sharing one new way to bring more gratitude into your everyday life.
It’s called a positivity jar, and the idea is that every time something good happens, you write it down on a little piece of paper, and throw it in the jar. By the end of the year, you hopefully will have a jar full of little reminders of why life is good that you can look back on!
I decided to do this throughout 2017 maybe a week ago, and I plan on looking back at all of my notes at the end of the year and celebrating the good with a glass of wine in hand and a smile on my face. I’m using an old jar that I somehow still had around, that I created in college with a friend to throw in all of our loose change to save up for a spring break trip (Very stereotypically, we went to Mexico). The jar says funny things like ‘Island getaway’ on it, which kind of makes me laugh. Hey, whatever motivates you to save money as a 19-year old college student right!
The idea is to write down all of the little things, not just monumental occasions – such as getting a big promotion or having a baby. Of course you’re grateful for those things and you can and should include those, but the little things are what tend to get forgotten.
The guy in front of you at the pizzeria randomly bought your dinner and told you to pass along the gesture? Write it down. (This actually happened to me last year!)
You had a wonderful night out with girlfriends that you don’t get to see a lot? Jot it down.
Positive things can be found all around us throughout our days, we just have to be conscious of recognizing them. Here’s to making 2017 a year filled with gratitude!
Tell me… How do you cultivate gratitude in your life? Ever heard of a positivity jar before?

I need some positivity right about now. Because this environment has got me angry… ARGH.

With so much craziness happening in America, it is more important than ever to focus on gratitude. I keep feeling bummed out and angry about it all, but then I try to refocus myself to be positive and constructive… the way I see it, there’s no point in being any other way. We’ve got to stand up for what’s right, but I don’t want to let this administration fill me with a hateful heart. That’s not who I am. Protesting, rallying together, and posting facts on social media are all forms of democracy in action, and I am thankful to be able to speak out against Trump with millions of others every single day!

What an awesome idea, Nicole! I’ve never heard of a positivity jar, but I totally want to do something like this. Think how fun that will be in December of this year when you sit down and read the notes from January and February! It’ll be the perfect way to reflect back on 2017. Also, I love that you left ‘island getaway’ on that jar! 🙂

Yup, and that’s exactly what I plan on doing at the end of 2017!

I love this idea! Focusing on the positive is definitely one of those things I am always working on. And this is such a great way to do it (and how fun at the end of the year??)

Thanks, Ashley! Ah yes, focusing on positivity is always a work in progress!

I love this – what a fabulous idea to help you see all the good stuff fill up as the jar gets full.

Thanks Abby, that is definitely the idea! Then when I look back at the year, I can focus on all of the good things.
