“Life is like sailing. You can use any wind to go in any direction.” – Robert Brault
When planning my recent trip to Cabo San Lucas, while my agenda was mostly to relax, I also wanted to get out to sea for an excursion. I love doing trip research beforehand, and there was no shortage of options for some adventure out on the water – not surprising for a place that’s situated with the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the Sea of Cortez on the east.
My hubby & I narrowed it down to what seemed like the best fit for our adventure. One of the perks of being in Cabo at the start of their slow tourist season is that there was no need to make excursion reservations in advance. On Sunday evening we booked a tour with our resort concierge for the next morning.
We decided on a luxury sailing tour with Cabo Adventures. A shuttle picked us up bright and early the next day, and off we went to the marina area of Cabo. Our tour group gathered at the Cabo Adventures’ large headquarters – which houses a dolphin activity center! – and soon we were setting sail on a sunny, hot Mexican day.
The tour included an open bar, and we immediately were greeted with mimosas. Our tour guide was very attentive and happy to refill our glasses throughout the day. We soon were also given an appetizer of guacamole & chips (+ shrimp that my hubby housed).
Guacamole eaten on a sailboat in Mexico = vacation heaven.
In my opinion, too much guacamole is never enough when vacationing in Mexico. Who agrees?!
Soon, we approached the majestic Arch of Cabo San Lucas. Called El Arco, it’s a gorgeous rock formation at the southern tip of Cabo. Not surprisingly, it’s definitely the most famous image of Cabo San Lucas.
We enjoyed sailing for awhile before reaching our snorkeling & swimming spot in the Sea of Cortez. I loved how the excursion only had 8 other people on it, so we had lots of room to lay out on the sailboat (and try not to get too toasty in the Mexican sun!). I saw a lot of other tour boats where people were packed like sardines, and I loved having ample space and such a chill atmosphere. I’m not sure what the max occupancy is for this tour, but the company notes on its website that they limit group sizes. A few of the other couples were really friendly to chat with during the trip – mostly Americans from all over the country, along with a couple from Colombia.
Once we got to our swimming spot, we had the chance to swim, snorkel and go standup paddleboarding. I always feel like I’m a horrible snorkeler – my eyes were burning like crazy with the super salty water, and I seem to always have trouble breathing, even with the mouthpiece! – but I had fun exploring. My hubby is much more of an open water sport person than I am, and he dominated SUP.
I definitely want to try SUP again this summer in San Diego. Maybe next time we’ll go to a calm body of water – versus the Pacific Ocean on a rocky day – and I’ll be able to try some SUP yoga!
After our free time was up, we hopped back into the sailboat to enjoy a catered lunch & some alcoholic beverages – Mai Tai’s for me, Dos Equis for him. I hadn’t let them know of my vegetarian dietary needs beforehand, but it actually worked out perfectly. Cabo Adventures provided each couple with a tray of food to share that really hit the spot for us, including fresh fruit, a light pasta salad, and bread for me, and tuna stuffed tomatoes and chicken caesar salad for him.
Lounging around on a sailboat enjoying booze & yummy food was not too shabby! Soon after we finished eating, we had to actually prepare ourselves for some adventurous sailing. As the captain adjusted the sails and we rode into the waves, we had to hold on tight to the boat. We were laughing as we laid on our stomachs with the boat completed angled at the water. I’ve gone sailing before, but never where the boat was riding completely sideways. It was so fun!
Our day of sailing was the perfect way to break up our ‘chill’ days of vacation, and we were definitely happy that we went with the tour that we did. It was a bit pricier than some of the other sea adventure tours – $109 per person; versus $79 per person for some of the other tours – and we definitely felt like it was worth it. Had we spent more time in Cabo, we probably would have also done Cabo Adventures’ mountain biking excursion as well. Maybe next time! 🙂
Upon returning from sailing, we hopped on a shuttle back to our resort, took late afternoon naps and relaxed for a bit, then had the best dinner of our trip (more on that to come!). How’s that for a pretty perfect day? It was the stuff that travel dreams are made of!
Tell me… Have you ever gone sailing?

I love marinas-could be around them for hours! When I was in Mexico we did an evening cruise and had margaritas and snacks-was a lot of fun!
