I’m always up for an adventure, and living in the San Diego area, there’s no shortage of fun to be had. With our year-round sunshine and moderate temperatures, I love taking advantage of the weather and getting outside as much as I can.
From my frequent hikes and walks along the coast, to mountain biking excursions and sunset beach picnics, I get outdoors as often as possible in my free time. One of my co-workers recently remarked that I’m always outside on the weekends, and it’s true! Being in nature makes my soul happy.
That’s why recently when local company Everyday California reached out and asked if I’d like to go on one of their adventure tours, I gladly accepted the offer. My Marine was away for training over Valentine’s Day weekend but we both had off of work for Presidents’ Day last Monday, so it seemed like the perfect belated V-Day date for us to have an adventure in the Pacific.
Everyday California is a board/kayak/snorkel rental, apparel, and adventure tour company located in the heart of La Jolla. We had actually been to their store before to go standup paddleboarding last summer, but had never done a guided tour with them. A couple of years ago we did a kayak sea cave tour in the very same area with another company, so I was interested to see how this tour compared.
We chose to do their whale watching kayak tour, which runs only in the winter from December-March when Grey Whales migrate south all the way to Mexico from Alaska to have their babies.
The day of our tour wound up being an absolutely perfect day weather-wise. It was 80 degrees (We’ve been getting a bit of a gorgeous winter heat wave!), sunny, and the ocean wasn’t too rough. We arrived at Everyday California to check in and get life vests and helmets. The store also offers lockers to store your stuff and dressing areas to change. Once the guides introduced themselves and got the tour started, we all walked down to the beach together.
Since the conditions when we went paddleboarding were really rough with larger than average waves, I was a little bit nervous about getting out into the ocean this time. While I wound up getting crushed by a few waves getting out (It somehow happens every single time!), our tour guides assisted everyone in getting their kayaks out past the break, and made sure that everyone cruised back in okay as well. I get a little freaked out by wild waves, so it was nice having the assurance of the guides there.
The tour guides also gave a quick tutorial on how to kayak before we went out, which is helpful if you’re a first-timer. I don’t recall the other tour we did offering much of a tutorial, and even though I’ve kayaked before, it’s always nice to get a little brush-up.
Once we got our kayaks out into the ocean, we kayaked alongside the path of where the whales are known to migrate. Throughout the 2-hour tour, we would watch and wait for a bit, then kayak some more. The guides shared some interesting info about the whales and La Jolla in general throughout the tour. One fun tidbit I learned? Dr. Suess was from La Jolla, and some of his most popular rhymes are actually about the area!
While we didn’t see any whales, we did spot some sea lions swimming around us. We got a kayaking workout in on a beautiful day, so while I would have loved to see whales swimming nearby, I have no complaints! Actually, I do have a complaint… My laptop mysteriously deleted ALL of the GoPro photos that I took on the tour, so I have no kayaking pics from the day to share. I’m bummed about it, but at least I have the memories even if I don’t have the pics to show for it, right?
We believe California is more than just the greatest state in the country. It’s also a state of mind, where adventure is just around the corner. And you don’t have to be here to be part of that dream. Our apparel reflects this attitude and our passion for sharing it. And we’ve only just begun, so hop on the Everyday California train because we’re about to take off. (Via Everyday California’s website)
Everyday California provided us with a great kayaking tour experience, and I have no doubts that we’ll visit them again the next time we’re in the mood for a La Jolla adventure. You can check out Everyday California’s website for more info on their tours and rental offerings.
After the tour, we had worked up an appetite, so we headed over to the nearby Trilogy Sanctuary – a yoga studio & vegan cafe that I fell in love with the last time I visited. This little tidbit from their website pretty much sums up why I’m such a fan:
WE LOVE FOOD! And we are fussy about what we eat – we only want organic, local, top quality food. Not only is our menu some of the tastiest food you will try – we are proud to say that we are 100% organic. Our menu is also vegan, gluten free and soy free. So tasty you would not believe that every single bite is pure nourishment for the body!
Besides their yummy, high-quality, plant-based food, another reason to fall in love with Trilogy is its location – on a rooftop in La Jolla in an adorable, zen space. Hungry for lunch, Adam and I both set our eyes on the portobello mushroom tacos with cashew cream, avocado and pico.
I also ordered their Pleasure super smoothie – which has banana, peanut butter, almond milk, cacao, cinnamon, hemp seeds and vanilla:
Lunch was so, so good! I wish that Trilogy was closer to my house, because if it was, I would definitely go there to work and nosh on their delicious food often. I’d like to get back there soon to attend one of their awesome sounding events and to also try another yoga class – maybe an aerial one next time!
All in all, our V-Day date was such a blast. Not a bad way to spend a Monday, right? 😉
Tell me… Have you every done a kayaking tour of any kind? Did you celebrate V-Day with anything special?
Disclaimer: While Everyday California provided us with a complimentary kayak tour, as always, all opinions expressed are genuinely my own.

I’ve wanted to do this since we first talked about moving here. I can’t wait to try it out this summer. And I want to try Trilogy! Vegas gets mad if I try to feed her Vegan food though… LOL! Maybe we can meet up in La Jolla once day. 🙂

P.S. Apparently I was commenting on your blog at the exact same time you were on mine. Hilarious.

Hahaha that is pretty funny! We’re stalking each other at the same time 😉

You definitely should go kayaking, it’s so fun! I’d bet $$ that Vegas would like this vegan food!! I’d love to meet up for lunch & beach time in La Jolla.

WOW! As I’m looking out on remnants of the last snow fall here, I’m drooling over these pictures and the thought of kayaking in 80 degrees! That is awful about your pictures but, the ones you were able to get from the web site and from last year are gorgeous!!
foodielovesfitness says
Thanks, Allie! It’ll be spring there before you know it 🙂

I love kayaking so much! It is such a fun way to explore! We’ve kayaked in a lot of places but I’ve never done a whale watching excursion. The last time we kayaked was in Iguacu Falls (luckily we didn’t go over haha!).
I had no idea that Dr. Suess was from La Jolla!
foodielovesfitness says
Yea your kayaking adventure in Iguacu Falls looked pretty awesome lady!

You are so good about getting outside on the weekends! I’ve been dying to see some whales too and I love the idea of doing a kayak tour. It’s too bad you didn’t spot any but it sounds like it was still a lot of fun! Sea lions are the cutest. 🙂
Also, I need a Trilogy near me too! Holy deliciousness.
foodielovesfitness says
You would LOVE Trilogy Sarah!
Yeah I love being outside…I figure I have to take advantage of all of the sunshine while I’m living in SoCal!

I’ve gone kayaking a few times with friends in the Monterey Bay. They have their own kayaks so there was no tour. 🙂 We had a great time and I can’t wait to go again!
foodielovesfitness says
Neat, I’d love to own a kayak! My parents have a canoe and I love taking it out on a whim and exploring.
Dani @ Dani California Cooks says
I love that activity date! We went kayaking near Monterey this summer and got SO close to a bunch of seals. Or were they sea lions? I’m not sure, we just were right up close and personal!
Calista says
The last time we went in Monterey, there were Humboldt squid EVERYWHERE! You probably saw sea lions – they are indeed everywhere. The harbor seals are smaller and quieter and are quite content to sunbathe on the rocks. 🙂
foodielovesfitness says
Monterey has a lot of sea lions too, so it was probably those guys! Did you know that sea lions are called so because their group behaviors & practices are actually similar to that of a lion pride? Learned that on the tour 🙂

Okay, not gonna lie that we’ve had such dreamy and cold weather here the last few days that I’m slightly jealous 🙂 haha I am dying for some sunshine!!! It looks like such a fun date! We didn’t do anything for valentine’s day this year since we were with my parents but I’m hoping we can just get outside for even a hike soon!
foodielovesfitness says
I feel ya, I really crave sunshine when it’s been lacking in my life too. I hope that you’ve gotten outside for a hike sometime in the past few weeks!
Abby @ BackAtSquareZero says
Oh my gosh sounds like the most amazing day.
Whale watching is so fun.
foodielovesfitness says
It is fun! Maybe one of these times I’ll be lucky enough to actually see whales 🙂
Dannii @ Hungry Healthy Happy says
That sounds like an amazing Valentine’s Day, but sadly ours was not quite so exciting.
I have kayaked a fair bit, but never done a tour. it’s on the list of things I want to do though.
