Hi friends!
First thing’s first: the winner of my Fit Body Bakery giveaway is Danielle Priser. Congrats, Danielle! I’ve emailed you for your contact info.
Let’s dive into the topic of the day: recent workouts!
You might know this by now, but I have total exercise ADHD. One month I do a ton of barre, hiking, and cycling, then the next month I’m all about boxing, Pilates and tennis. Sitting on the elliptical with a magazine every day is a horribly boring idea to me. I just love switching my workouts up and keeping things interesting!
So what have my workouts been like lately? I’ve been doing a lot of yoga, HIIT sessions, and at-home kickboxing, with a few Pilates classes and hikes mixed in (really only because the last few months were too hot for hiking inland in SoCal). The other thing I’ve been doing a lot is taking classes at The Fit Mill in Carlsbad.
I briefly mentioned this studio the very first time I took a freebie class there a couple of months ago. Well, I liked it so much, I decided to buy a package and frequent it more in September and October… and I loved it!
If I were to open a fitness studio, it would embody many of the things that The Fit Mill does: The instructors are spunky and personable. The workouts are dynamic, challenging and always evolving. The classes incorporate a nice balance of cardio and strength, and the moves change often.
With each class, you workout at each of their six circuit stations: biking, TRX, rowing, the gravity machine, the wall station where you usually work on your core in some way, and what they call “Toys” – which includes exercises with a step, and sometimes incorporates bars, weights and/or medicine balls, among other things. Each circuit includes 3 rounds of 4 exercises. The focus on fast timed intervals makes the classes always whiz by for me. You go, go, go and then before you know it, you’re done!
The studio is bright, clean and fun, and situated in a nice location. One of the nice touches they give the studio are the quotes hanging up on the walls.
All in all, this place just oozes positivity and a focus on being strong and fit. It’s just got good vibes. Even though there are a lot of exercises in each workout, I don’t think the classes are intimidating to newbies because you can simply go at your own pace. Plus the instructors help you along the whole time if you aren’t sure what you’re doing (which is totally me sometimes!).
The Fit Mill is great for ADHD exercisers like myself, and I have never gotten bored in a class. The structure of the classes is always the same, so you can expect that much – but besides that, you’re not sure what workout you’re walking into. While some people might like knowing exactly what they’re about to do in a class, I like not knowing. I find it to be a really fun and interesting way to workout!
One thing’s for sure: I always leave The Fit Mill nice and sweaty. On average, I burn 500 calories per each hourlong class (plus typically another 100 calories post-workout if I leave my HRM on for a bit after I leave the studio). I love that it’s total body, and focuses on strength along with heart-pounding exercises. Some classes focus specifically more on the core, but those are still total body workouts.
The Fit Mill is a HIIT workout, so throughout the entire class you get short breaks to take a breather and let your body rest. It’s also interval training in that you go from strength exercises of the TRX machine with short breaks mixed in, to high-intensity rowing for 7 minutes straight, then you get a break and move onto core work. Usually at some point in the class I feel super fatigued (the rowing machine is killer!), but it isn’t bad when you know that you’re about to move onto something else. That’s the beauty of a HIIT workout with variety.
Another great thing about The Fit Mill is that it’s affordable. I’ve taken classes at so many different types of studios, and one thing I’ve noticed is that the prices at some of the studios are what I consider to be high, especially since I never commit to doing just one type of workout for an entire month. The Fit Mill is more reasonable, offering class rates from $5-15. You can check out current pricing info here.
Tell me… Do you do circuit training workouts? What workout(s) have you been loving lately?

This workout sounds tough! I wish I had one near me. I don’t currently do much circuit training but would like to start.

Sounds like a great studio! It looks really airy too, which is awesome in SD! It sounds like a similar concept to The Fhitting Room in NYC. I did their workout before I got preggers and thought it was super intense. I love a good HIIT workout but ever since having the baby, I’ve been a bit more inclined to lower impact workouts. I don’t know why!

Haha, workout ADHD – it’s nice to know there is a name for it, as that is what I have too. I like to mix things up though, as it means that I am keeping my body guessing.

That looks like a lot of fun! I’ve been doing a lot of tabata-style workouts via Fitness Blender and I’ve been loving them! They definitely give me a full body workout and I really enjoy the fact that I don’t need any equipment and I can do them in my own home. Also, they’re free! Huge added bonus!
