And now, I’m excited to share with you an interview with my friend Autumn from Tailored Fitness. I first met Autumn at last year’s Blogfest at the IDEA World Fitness Convention. Autumn also lives in the San Diego area and is a co-owner of Tailored Fitness, a workout program specifically designed for busy moms and women who are expecting. As a full-time mom to an adorable daughter and with another baby on the way, Autumn knows a thing or two about juggling a healthy, active lifestyle. Read on to learn more about her!
ME: What inspired you to create Tailored Fitness?
AUTUMN: I grew up in a really active family and I was blessed to have parents that showed me what healthy living looked like. I grew up really enjoying exercise because of their example.
When many of my friends started having kids they shared how challenging it was to get to the gym and find time for exercise in general. Several friends asked for advice on home workout programs for moms and after doing a little research, I realized, there really weren’t many great ones just for moms.
Moms have such a powerful influence on their kids and I wanted to create a simple way for them to exercise at home, but still have the support of a trainer for questions, plus the accountability and encouragement you get from a group class. That is how Tailored Fitness was born!
ME: Can you talk a bit about how the program works?
AUTUMN: When you open the Tailored Fitness app (app.mytailoredfitness.com), you’ll find the workout of the day, you can simple press play and get started in seconds. The video plays like a workout DVD and can be played on your computer, tablet, or phone. We even have a handful of our workouts available for free so you can try them out!
If you want to choose your workout, you can browse by length, intensity, workout style, or even trimester of pregnancy. Or you can try one of our programs, which combines a series of workouts into a plan for you to follow.
When you become a member, then you also get to participate in our monthly challenges. Right now we are in the middle of a 3 week Sizzle for Summer challenge with a workout schedule and nutrition tips to help you feel your best this summer. When you finish your workouts, we can see, so you have built in accountability, even though you are working out at home!
ME: What’s unique about your program versus other online fitness programs out there?
AUTUMN: What sets Tailored Fitness apart from other workout programs is our approach to health. Most other fitness programs focus on getting bikini ready and include crazy diets. Our program is about a healthy lifestyle. There is so much more to health that looking good in a bikini. We focus on helping you live a healthier lifestyle so that you can be healthy and strong.
We also are one of the few programs that is made specifically with moms in mind. Although we have members who aren’t moms, most of the women that love our program are right in the craziness of raising kids and they love the convenience of our program and having workouts that are safe during and after pregnancy.
ME: What do you love most about running My Tailored Fitness? What’s the most challenging aspect of your business?
AUTUMN: What I love the most is getting to connect with awesome women all around the world who are all working towards the same goal of setting a healthy example for their families! It’s amazing to be able to help influence the next generation and hear stories of how our program impacts the lives of our members. I also love sharing my soul on our blog and being able to encourage others through what I am going through.
The toughest part is balancing all I have on my plate. I am a type A perfectionist and I want to do everything to the best of my ability. I am constantly thinking of new ideas to make Tailored Fitness even better. But I also have the privilege of being a full time mom for our sweet 2 year old daughter and another daughter on the way this fall. So finding time to work while keeping being mom as my #1 priority is tough. But I love being able to do both and despite the struggle, I wouldn’t have it any other way!
ME: Can you talk a bit about why you think it’s important for pregnant women and new moms to be active and stick with a fitness routine? How has fitness helped you throughout your pregnancies and motherhood?
AUTUMN: This is one of my very favorite topics! Let’s start with pregnancy: There are so many amazing benefits of exercising during pregnancy, that all have been research proven! From a shorter labor, easier recovery, and easier time getting back into your pre-pregnancy jeans to benefits for the baby like a stronger heart and better ability to deal with stress, exercise during pregnancy is huge! There’s lots of confusion what is and isn’t safe during pregnancy, so I love putting together prenatal workouts that our members can do with confidence to know that the exercises are not only safe, but designed specifically to help them during their pregnancy.
As a new mom, exercise is so important, especially to deal with all the emotional changes during this crazy season. Rebuilding the strength you lost during pregnancy is key to fitting back into your pre-pregnancy clothes and starting to feel like yourself again. We have workouts specifically to help you re-build your core muscles, even if you’ve had separation in your abs.
Staying active has helped me so much during both my pregnancies and my time as a mom. During my pregnancies, I was free of the aches and pains that many women deal with like back pain and hip pain. And even though I ended up with a c-section, my recovery was great and I was able to regain strength and lose the baby weight with consistent exercise. I love getting to share these stories with my members and encourage them to embrace exercise during this unique season of life!
ME: Lastly, can you share info on the cost for My Tailored Fitness membership? Are there different levels of membership?
AUTUMN: Our membership is super simple and really affordable. There are 3 ways to join:
