One of the many reasons that I dig living in San Diego is all of its awesome local businesses geared towards healthy living. There’s no shortage of juice bars, veg eateries, fitness studios, spas, yoga centers and lots more around to explore. Being the wellness lover that I am, I experience these places as much as I can.
I’ve teamed up with ClassPass again for a blogger project (more on that to come soon!), so lately I’ve been a fitness class maniac, booking classes at studios all over San Diego County in my never-ending attempt to find the best workouts in the area.
Last week I journeyed over to the beautiful beach town of La Jolla to meet up with a girlfriend of mine for a yoga class at Trilogy Sanctuary. Immediately when I walked in, I was like all, Ooooh! So cute, I love this place!
Situated on the rooftop of a building in the middle of La Jolla’s main shopping and restaurant area, Trilogy Sanctuary gives off laid back SoCal vibes. Not only is it a yoga studio that specializes in aerial yoga, they also have a vegan cafe and juice bar. Diners can lounge on cozy couches and tables and watch the yoga classes, which take place directly next to the cafe.
The yoga class we took was definitely more of a restorative one, with a lot of stretching and vinyasa flows. I’ve come to realize that my preferred type of yoga is usually a fast-paced and challenging practice, but since my muscles were really sore from my more intense workouts the day before, I really enjoyed the relaxing class. It’s the perfect kind of practice to do on an active rest day or low-impact exercise day.
Plus, there’s something so magical about doing yoga outdoors on a gorgeous day. I feel this sort of calm, mindful sensation pretty much every time I do yoga on the beach, at a park, and in this case, on a rooftop. It’s just a serene and relaxing peace that takes over you. The weather was perfect, and there was a nice breeze drifting over from the ocean.
After our yoga class, my friend and I stopped by the cafe to grab a bite to eat. The menu is 100% vegan, organic, gluten and soy free, and features juices, smoothies, wraps, acai bowls, dessert and more. They had a lot of awesome sounding menu items, including portobello mushroom tacos and spaghetti squash dishes, and we took more than a few minutes to decide on what to get.
I settled on a kale superfood salad, which had goji berries and sunflower seeds in a cashew caesar dressing. She ordered a wrap with hummus, butternut squash, beets, avocado, and cucumber, and we split their “Lust” smoothie, which had almond milk, cacao, banana, date, cinnamon, and a few other goodies in it.
I prefer my kale to be more massaged and not as tough as it was in this salad, but the dressing was delicious, I ate every single goji berry, and wound up noshing on most of the kale as well. The smoothie was delicious! Then again, I love smoothies with dates, cinnamon and banana, and don’t think I’ve ever tried one that I didn’t like.
I really want to go back and try one of their juices, as a few sounded really good – including their “Rehydrate” juice, which contains pineapple, kale, romaine, cucumber and lemon.
We got cozy on a couch on the patio to eat our lunches and watch the aerial yoga class that was taking place. While I’ll try any workout once, I had thought before even seeing the aerial yoga class that it just doesn’t seem like it’d be my thing. As I mentioned before, I like more fast-paced yoga, and aerial yoga seems like it’s a lot of hanging upside-down with all the blood rushing to your head and swinging around. Plus, it doesn’t look all that easy – am I right?
But to each his or her own, and it was neat to at least check out how a sky yoga class goes. Check out Trilogy’s aerial yoga page to see how extremely graceful seasoned sky yogis look in their poses!
Between the relaxing scenery, cute rooftop studio and cafe they’ve got set up, vegan menu full of nourishing, yummy sounding items, and of course, the unique yoga classes they offer, I found Trilogy Sanctuary to be an ideal place to get your zen on in San Diego. In fact, neither of us wanted to leave! Too bad my parking meter was out and it was time to get back to my day’s tasks, but it was lovely to escape to this sanctuary for a few hours… and I definitely want to get back there sometime soon for more yoga and relaxation!
Tell me… Have you ever been to a rooftop yoga or fitness studio? How do you bring some zen into your life?

Wow this looks like an amazing experience! Although id fall flat on my face if I tried hanging upside down on those things. Yep, think id better stick to the squat rack 😉

Not gonna lie, aerial yoga scares the mess out of me! But maybe I will try it one day just for that reason! 🙂 glad you had a great time, I have done yoga on a rooftop it was incredible. Something about yoga+outdoors makes it extra awesome!

100% agreed! I’m hoping to get to the beach to do yoga this weekend…

I am obsessed with that rooftop! I would love to regularly do yoga outside like that. I love a restorative class for when I’m sore and just need some extra stretching. I’ve done aerial yoga a couple of times and it is really fun and a great ab and arm workout!

I totally agree, and I’ve become much more open to doing restorative yoga than I used to be. In the past I would be all about go-go-go workouts, but then I realized that that is just not always what my body needs. We’ve just got to listen to our bodies, right? 🙂

There are no words to describe how much I want to teleport myself to you right now. This place looks incredible! The food reminds me of a restaurant in Chicago called Blue Door, but that yoga studio and view is completely unparalleled. What an amazing place to be able to center yourself and be present in your practice!

Come visit Lauren!! 😉 Would you believe that I’ve NEVER been to Chicago before? I might need to make a trip to your city — but in the warmer months because I’m not sure I’d enjoy the cold + windy weather!
