If I had to describe what healthy living means to me in one word, I’d say balance.
Balance is a tricky thing: You don’t just have it and keep it, it’s something that you need to constantly work at, and it isn’t always easily found. I’ve found myself swinging too far over on one side on the coin, only to later find myself way over in the other direction. But the beauty is that every day is a chance to achieve better balance, in whatever way you need it. A couple of the main ways that I’m constantly trying to keep things aligned in my life include:
- Balancing exercising often while also giving my body a chance to rest.
- Maintaining a work/life balance.
- Finding the right balance of time with technology and media while also being mindful and enjoying my life right here, right now.
- Balancing my diet with lots of healthy foods but also some indulgent foods.
More specifically, I’m always trying to balance my diet with healthy amounts of a variety of vitamins of minerals; sweet foods and savory foods; and paying attention to my macro ratios on a daily basis, so that I’m not eating all the carbs and not enough protein.
In the same token, I look to find balance in my diet with the drinks that I consume: I’m always trying to stay hydrated to keep my body energized and nourished, so you’ll always find me with water nearby. I drink green juice a few mornings a week to get some fresh veggies and fruit in early in my day. I love wine, but since it’s dehydrating and sometimes headache-causing, I try to keep my vino drinking at a moderate amount.
And then there are sports drinks.
I used to drink post-workout sports drinks like Powerade and Gatorade, but as I started getting more particular about the artificial flavors and sweeteners that I put in my body and phasing out less natural foods and drinks in my life, I stopped drinking them. Luckily, in recent times, some more natural electrolyte drink companies have popped onto the scene, so I’ve now been enjoying sports drinks when I’m feeling depleted from my workouts (or when I’m trying to achieve better balance in my body after I’ve had a few glasses of wine!) – only without the sucralose this time around.
One sports drink that I recently had the chance to try out is pHenOH 7.4 – a new paleo-friendly drink made with 7 ingredients, including organic Aloe vera and agave nectar. What I think is cool about Phenoh 7.4 is that the company stresses achieving better balance in the body, and while most sports drink are very acidic, pHenOH 7.4 is the first sports drink that focuses on balancing the body’s pH. The drink is low on the glycemic index, and is fortified with magnesium and vitamin C to promote healthy immunity and metabolism.
Why is pH in the body important?
Basically the pH in your body is based on a scale that looks at the level of alkalinity and acidity. Our diets tend to be very acidic, and having a really off-balance pH can cause problems in the digestive, immune, muscular, circulatory and respiratory systems, among others. Um, no thanks! If you want to be at optimal health, one of the things to make a habit of is finding a balance between the alkaline and acidic foods and drinks that you’re consuming.
So what’s pHenOH 7.4 like?
The drink is pretty mild, and I mostly taste the agave nectar. I like that it’s nice and sweet. The drink is a kind of odd yellow color – think a paler version of the conventional lemon lime sports drink color (pictured above). On several occasions I’ve poured a glass of it after dinner not only to rehydrate and refuel my body, but also to give me that little something sweet that I crave after a meal. Besides icing, stretching, foam rolling, and relaxing, I like feeling that I’m aiding my workout recovery by drinking pHenOH 7.4.
You can check out more about pHenOH 7.4 here. If you’re interested in trying out pHenOH 7.4 yourself, the company will ship its drinks to all of you fellow U.S. residents for free, which I think is pretty sweet.
Tell me… Do you consume sports drinks? What things do you routinely do to recover from workouts?

Good for your for refueling your body post workout! …I usually just try to eat balanced meals and little snacks/ treats and listen to my body to get a feel for what it needs! …I’m not a huge workout person… I’m more of a walker/ yogi! Haha!!

I love sports drinks but don’t like all of the artificial stuff found in a lot of them either, so thanks for sharing!!

Thanks for reading!

Good for you! I totally feel the same way so I have been using coconut water as a drink to refuel during/after my workouts.
foodielovesfitness says
That’s a good idea too!

I’m not a huge sports drink person. I have had coconut water on occasion but I actually don’t find it all that hydrating. I’m with you on being conscious of the sweeteners I put in my body!
foodielovesfitness says
Yea, aspartame and sucralose are hidden in so many foods!

Oooo I wanna try this! I just drink Nuun, but I like the concept of this!! I actually have some ph strips at home so that I can check my levels here and there. Where did you find it??
foodielovesfitness says
Oh interesting, I haven’t done the pH strip thing yet! I found about them through a partnership with Fit Approach. Let me know if you try it out!

Wow what a positive review! You must have NOT tested the actual pH as I did. The pH on the two I bought were both 6.3, a full point more acidic than the claims. It tasted great but why spent the money on water when I can buy products that really do have high pH.

As a physician we hage begun to see a new phenomenon which is exercise induced gastro esophageal reflux. This in turn can increase bouts of coughing and asthma like symptoms. The key piece of this is that an acidic sports drink makes this whole cycle far worse. This fantastic product is a high ph sports drink that should be a Godsend to athletes. Bravo
Reggie says
bob arnot, Check the ph (as I did) and you will find it is SLIGHTLY above tap water. I ha e not found one even close to 7.4 yet.
