Hi friends!
Can you believe that we’re already halfway through September? My month has been a very active one, between Fitwall classes, hiking, strength training, kickboxing and yoga.
You may remember that a few weeks ago I introduced you guys to Fitwall. You can check out my workout overview post here, but the basic gist of Fitwall is that it’s a high-intensity 40-minute strength, cardio, and flexibility class that focuses on training on your own “wall” space, as shown below.
(The above picture is from Fitwall’s Twitter on National Dog Day!)
Since the classes are only 40 minutes and focus on timed intervals, the workouts whiz by quickly for me. There’s lots of instructor direction to show participants the moves and to make sure that everyone has the correct form. For the month of September, Fitwall’s classes are all movie puns, which I like since I’m all about keeping things fun. I’ve done their ‘Sleeveless in Seattle’ and ‘The Glutebook’ workouts….
…but my favorite class of the month has been the one they call ‘Gone with the Waist.’
This workout features a lot of strength training and toning moves, including squats with cable resistance, alternating pushups to side planks, pull-ups on the wall and cable rows. All of the workouts include some form of cardio intervals. In ‘Gone with the Waist’ the intervals are spaced throughout the class and we do moves like squat jumps, burpees and lateral jumps.
The class also includes moves that work on range of motion while squatting on the wall, including side oblique kicks and kickbacks, as shown below:

One move that I haven’t quite been awhile to master yet it what Fitwall calls “targeting” – which is when you’re supposed to glide up and down the wall by jumping onto the first wall row in 2 steps, jumping with 1 foot to the second row, hoping onto the third in 2 steps again, then doing the same on the way down. I can do it at a slower pace without falling on my face, but it makes me laugh because I feel like I’m clunking onto the steps, while the instructors just gracefully float up and down the rows because they rely more on their arms than their legs. That type of upper body strength is something that I’ve been working towards during my Fitwall sessions!
Fitwall members have the option of using a heart rate monitor provided for by the gym, which tracks not only your workout’s intensity through heart rate monitoring and recovery tracking, but also your progress throughout your membership. At the end of the class it shows you your ‘Fit Factor’ – a number determined by how intense you worked out and how well you recovered in between sets. Pretty neat!
As I mentioned in my last Fitwall blog post, all Fitwall classes end with a cold washcloth and a shot of coconut water that we cheers with, which I think is a nice little touch.
I took ‘Gone with the Waist’ for the second time last night, and my shoulder blades and booty are definitely sore from it! With every class that I’ve done, I’ve burned between 400-480 calories. Burning 10+ calories a minute equates to an awesome and efficient workout to me!
My friend and workout buddy Tiffany also came in to take a Fitwall class with me. A shot of us ladies post-workout (I’m clearly sweaty!):
Fitwall has a few gyms in SoCal in Solana Beach and La Jolla, with a new gym opening up soon in Newport Beach. They also have a location in Cheyenne, WY. If you live near any of the areas and are interested in trying out Fitwall, you’re in luck because they offer free trials! You can visit here to get started and schedule your first class.

The instructor looks like she is floating on air in that one photo! So cool!
I’ve been sticking with a steady routine of yoga, barre classes, pilates, Zumba and tennis. I’m hoping to keep it up for at least another month. Fingers crossed!

I’m going to sound like such a dweeb but this post just made me so happy for the fitness world! Look how far it’s come – back in the day it was either sit on the couch, do Jane Fonda’s VHS, or lace up your New Balance sneakers and jog. Now fitness is so freaking fun! Fitwall looks like a blast! There’s truly something out there for everyone, and I love that. Thanks for sharing! Those movie puns are hilarious haha I love Sleeveless in Seattle
